[Legacy Report] First CIS – IEEE Ecuadorian Doctoral Symposium on Computational Intelligence
Co-sponsored by: Marco Enrique Benalcazar Palacios
The First CIS – IEEE Ecuadorian Doctoral Symposium on Computational Intelligence was held as part of the 2nd Ecuador Technical Chapters Meeting (ETCM) 2017. The main goal of this event was to bring together Ph.D. students within the computational intelligence field to discuss their research projects/proposals in an international forum. This doctoral symposium provided to the students with an opportunity to:
- Present their research work in a scientific environment;
- Receive feedback and suggestions from peers and experienced faculty;
- Gain an overview of the breadth and depth of the computational intelligence field;
- Obtain insight into directions for computational intelligence research taken by other doctoral candidates;
- Discuss concerns about research, supervision, the job market, and other issues;
- Network with peers and future colleagues
With these activities, this symposium helped the students and their advisors to shape the ongoing and future research projects aimed at computational intelligence. It also promoted scholarships and networking among new researchers in this emerging interdisciplinary area. This symposium also exposed these promising young researchers to the larger global community.
The number of papers accepted and presented in this symposium was 7. The advisors who reviewed and evaluated the oral presentations were: Fernando Buarque, Pablo Estevez, and María Pérez. The chairs of the symposium were Marco E. Benalcázar and Enrique Peláez. Based on the averages of the scores assigned by the reviewers to each presentation, the work of Andrés Jaramillo entitled “Real-Time Hand Gesture Recognition with EMG Using Machine Learning” was awarded with the prize for the best paper of this doctoral symposium.
