IEEE MOVE Interested Group Form
We are delighted with your interest in joining the IEEE MOVE Community Outreach initiative. The MOVE program is looking for qualified volunteers who not only have a deep passion for humanitarian work but also the expertise, wisdom and time to commit in support of the program. We are currently seeking candidates for leadership positions of committees and working groups for our global program expansion. Currently we are looking for volunteers in support of our programs in Puerto Rico. We realize that few people have the ability to extensively volunteer to a program such as ours. It is through the diverse efforts of committee members, each contribution their time and resources as they are able, in a combined effort that allows us to address the many programmatic needs. Information you provide will allow us to appreciate your talents and time so we can best engage you in the program. For more information, you can visit the (https://move.ieee.org/) webpage. Seminar: Prof. Ambrish Chandra – Electrical Energy Situation and Microgrid Projects in Canada
Electrical Energy Situation and Microgrid Projects in Canada Speaker: Dr. AMBRISH CHANDRA Abstract: Renewable energy generation in Canada is different from other countries around the world. Present energy scenario in Canada will be discussed with efforts being made to integrate renewables with the grid. Several isolated areas in the North of Canada currently use only diesel generators to serve their requirements of electrical energy. Efforts are being made to integrate renewables to reduce the pollution and the consumption of diesel to reduce the cost of electricity generation for isolated communities. Bio: Ambrish Chandra received the B.E. degree from IIT Roorkee, India, in 1977, the M.Tech. degree from IIT Delhi, in 1980, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Calgary, in 1987. Since 1994, he is working as a Professor at the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), Montreal, Canada. The primary focus of his work is related to the advancement of new theory and control algorithms for power electronic converters for power quality improvement in distribution systems and integration of renewable energy sources. He is coauthor of the book Power Quality: Problems and Mitigation Techniques published by John Wiley and Sons. He is a recipient of ‘IEEE Montreal Gold Medal Award 2024 for Life-Time Achievements’, ‘IETE – Bimal Bose Award 2024, Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, India’, ‘Distinguished Alumnus Award 2022, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, India’, ‘IEEE Power and Energy Society Nari Hingorani Custom Power Award 2021’, and ‘IEEE Canada P. Ziogas Electric Power Award 2018’. He is registered as a Professional Engineer in the province of Quebec, Canada. Co-sponsored by: CETELI/UFAM Speaker(s): Chandra, Bldg: Auditório do CETELI , Av. International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11F)
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated to recognize the vital contributions of women in science and technology, and to promote equal opportunities in STEM fields. Despite progress over the years, women remain underrepresented in many scientific areas. This day inspires future generations and highlights the achievements of women scientists worldwide. To celebrate this special day, we will visit a local school in Mérida to engage students with a variety of interactive and hands-on science activities. The program is designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong interest in science. Activities include: - Science Talks: Short, inspiring presentations introducing students to pioneering women scientists and their contributions to different fields. - Hands-on Workshops: Students will participate in fun experiments that demonstrate fundamental scientific concepts, encouraging exploration and critical thinking. - Build Your Own Spectroscope: A creative workshop where students assemble their own simple spectroscopes, learning about light, colors, and spectra. - Storytelling Sessions: Science-themed stories that connect imagination and scientific ideas, making learning both fun and memorable. - Science Magic Show: Visually stunning demonstrations such as “Elephant Toothpaste,” giant bubbles, fire experiments, and other interactive experiments that make science appear magical, while explaining the principles behind them. This event aims to inspire students, especially girls, to explore STEM subjects, appreciate the role of women in science, and experience the excitement and wonder of scientific discovery in an engaging and interactive environment.
