IEEE/GRSS Supports Special Session on DATA FUSION during SBSR2019

IEEE/GRSS supported a Special Session on the Topic "Challenges and Opportunities on UAV Data Analysis: From Data Fusion to
Deep Learning Applications" during the XIX Brazilian Symposium on Remote Sensing.

Summary: The recent increase in the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and associated remote sensing technologies opens a broad range of opportunities for improving earth observation applications. Furthermore, the cost-effectiveness of these instruments, compared to orbital and airborne sensors, makes them very attractive. This is especially true considering that UAVs can be equipped with several onboard sensors. In order to fully benefit from these technologies, several initiatives from both scientific and technical perspectives have been carried out. However, the huge amount of data, provided by UAVs, still pose new challenges ranging from storage to data fusion learning issues. This thematic session aims to provide new insights to this multidisciplinary field, by fostering discussion about existing cutting-edge solutions and opportunities in the area.

This special session occurred on April 16 during the XIX Brazilian Symposium on Remote Sensing (SBSR) and was conducted by members of the GRSS'Brazil Chapter Board, Dr. Jefersson Alex dos Santos (UFMG) and Dr. Veraldo Liesenberg (UDESC). The special session was organized as follow.

The first talk was delivered by the current President of the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS), Prof. Dr. Paolo Gamba (University of Pavia, Italy) with the title "Challenges and perspectives of Data Fusion Learning Techniques ".

The session also counted with a special lecture delivered by Prof. Hemerson Pistori (Dom Bosco Catholic University - UCDB) under the topic "Deep Learning Applications with UAV ".

The last talk delivered in this special session was given by Prof. Ricardo da Silva Torres (University of Campinas - UNICAMP) with the title "Fusion of Time Series Representations for Target Recognition ".

The special session counted with a round table in which all lecturers were available for questions from the audience.

The audience consisted on about 50 participants that were active in making questions and sharing their concerns.

After the discussion with questions & answers, the session was closed.
