IEEE/GRSS Supports Special Session on SAR during SBSR-2019

IEEE/GRSS supported a Special Session on the Topic "Advances in SAR: Sensors, Methodologies, and Applications" during the XIX Brazilian Symposium on Remote Sensing.

Summary: The key importance of radar remote sensing for earth observation applications has been recognized for decades, and enormous scientific and technical developments have been carried out to further improve the SAR sensors and SAR data processing. SAR data can be obtained by systems ranged now not only from traditional airborne and satellite levels but also from terrestrial stations and even carried on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). More recently, SAR satellite constellations consisting of two or more satellites are also becoming usual. The present availability of these SAR sensors (and several other planned SAR missions) may supply a continuous stream of data for a variety of earth observation applications. However, the powerful and unique information is only available when proper data processing methodology is applied. This thematic session brings new contributions in this field.

This special session occurred on April 15 during the XIX Brazilian Symposium on Remote Sensing (SBSR) and was conducted by members of the GRSS'Brazil Chapter Board, Dr. Rafael Paes (IEAv/CTA) and Dr. Veraldo Liesenberg (UDESC). The special session was organized as follow.

The first talk was delivered by Dr. João Roberto Moreira Neto (BRADAR, EMBRAER Defense & Security) with the title "State of the Art and Cartographic Applications using Airborne SAR".

The session also counted with a special lecture delivered by Dr. Yang Du (Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China) under the topic "Modeling and Interpretation of SAR Scattering Mechanisms".

Then, Dr. Rafael Lemos Paes (Institute for Advanced Studies from Aeronautics Technical Center - IEAv/CTA) delivered a talk under the topic "Performing Polarimetric Response Analysis using Multifrequency SAR".

The last talk delivered in this special session was given by Dr. Alejandro César Frery (University of Alagoas - UFAL) with the title "Recent Advances in SAR statistical data analysis".

The special session counted with a round table in which all lecturers were available for questions from the audience.

The audience consisted on about 40 participants that were active in making questions and sharing their concerns.

After the discussion with questions & answers, the session was closed with a group picture of the lecturers, organizers and the current President of the GRSS, Dr. Paolo Gamba (University of Pavia, Italy).
